Meeting of the MAFMC Demersal Committee, with Subcommittee of ASMFC Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Board

The Council's Demersal Committee will meet jointly with a subset of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's (ASMFC) Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Board (Board) on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport Hotel, 1739 W Nursery Rd, Linthicum, MD 21090; telephone: (410) 694-0808.

The Demersal Committee and members of the Board will meet to review and discuss draft options for management of the commercial summer flounder fishery under the Comprehensive Summer Flounder Amendment, including options for addressing permit capacity and latent effort, commercial allocation, and landings flexibility. The goal of the meeting is to refine the draft range of alternatives and provide additional guidance to staff on adding specificity to the alternatives and analyzing their impacts, prior to additional consideration by the Council and Board at their August 2017 joint meeting.

Summer Flounder Allocation Peer Review Meeting

The Council will convene a peer review panel consisting of members of the MAFMC’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) and other outside experts, to review a summer flounder allocation model project. The meeting will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton BWI Airport (890 Elkridge Landing Rd, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090; telephone: (410) 859-8400.)

The MAFMC contracted the development of this project to inform consideration of potential changes to the allocation of annual catch and landings limits between the commercial and recreational sectors of the summer flounder fishery. This analysis aims to determine which allocations would maximize benefits to the commercial and recreational sectors. The results of this project and peer review are scheduled to be presented to the MAFMC in December 2016.

Summer Flounder Amendment FMAT Meeting

The Council's Summer Flounder Amendment Fishery Management Action Team (FMAT) will meet via webinar on Monday, September 26, 2016 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. The FMAT will discuss draft revisions to FMP goals and objectives for summer flounder, and discuss tasks for the amendment's commercial and recreational issues working groups.

Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel Meeting

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s (Council’s) Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Advisory Panel will meet on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Double Tree by Hilton Baltimore –BWI Airport, 890 Elkridge Landing Road, Linthicum, Maryland, 21090; telephone: (410)-859-8400.

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss recent performance of the commercial and recreational fisheries for summer flounder, scup, and black sea bass, and develop annual Fishery Performance Reports for these fisheries. The Council and the ASMFC will consider the Fishery Performance Reports later in 2016 when reviewing previously implemented multi-year fishery specifications (i.e., catch and landings limits and management measures) for 2017. The AP will also discuss summer flounder management alternatives under development for the Council and ASMFC’s ongoing Comprehensive Summer Flounder Amendment.
