Industry Workshop on Safe Work Environment for Observers

NOAA Fisheries and the Office of Law Enforcement will host three workshops for fishing industry members to help answer common questions about harassment and sexual assault/harassment, and to further support observers in the field. One of the workshops is scheduled for December 12th at 2:30 at the Westin Annapolis after the December 2025 Council meeting

The workshops will be hosted in-person and will have a hybrid option for those interested in participating virtually. Workshops are voluntary and the topics will include: what constitutes harassment, how to communicate safety-related concerns, how NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement follows up on harassment reports, and more. The workshop is expected to last approximately 50 minutes, consisting of a 30 minute presentation with time left for questions. Industry members are encouraged to attend.

Visit the workshop page on the NOAA Fisheries website for additional details.

Scup Gear Restricted Areas Public Workshop

  • See location details below (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), in cooperation with the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, will hold a workshop to collect industry input on the current scup Gear Restricted Areas (GRAs). The Council and CCE are particularly seeking input from small mesh trawl fishermen. However, anyone with an interest in the scup GRAs is invited to attend.

When: Wednesday November 20, 2024, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Where: The workshop will be held at three in-person locations with a webinar option available:

  • Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Office 423 Griffing Ave., Riverhead, NY 11901

  • Superior Trawl 55 State St., Narragansett, RI 02882

  • Lund’s Fisheries – 997 Ocean Drive, Cape May, NJ 08204

  • Webinar (Zoom) – Connection information is available here

Registration: Please register here if you are planning to attend.

Workshop Purpose: The workshop will be facilitated by CCE as part of a Council-funded project titled “Utilizing Collaborative Strategies to Assess and Adapt Scup GRAs in Response to Climate Change.” First implemented in 2000 and 2001, the Council’s two scup GRAs are intended to reduce juvenile scup discards in small mesh fisheries during certain times of the year. Recent data suggest there has been a shift in where and when scup discards occur, and it is anticipated that changes may continue with changing ocean conditions and species distributions. Industry input provided during this workshop will be used along with fisheries and environmental data to evaluate potential changes to the GRAs.

Additional Information: Visit the Cornell Cooperative Extension page to learn more.

East Coast Climate Change Scenario Planning Summit

  • Westin Arlington Gateway (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Overview

As part of the final stage of the East Coast Climate Change Scenario Planning Initiative, East coast fishery management organizations convened an in-person summit meeting February 15-16, 2023 in Arlington, Virginia. This meeting served as a venue to develop a set of governance, management, and monitoring recommendations from the scenario planning process.

During the meeting, participants considered the scenarios previously developed to describe how climate change might affect East Coast fisheries in the next 20 years, as well as input received in previous stages on actions that should be taken now to ensure that fisheries are governed and managed effectively in an era of climate change.

Summit participants included representatives from each of the three U.S. East Coast Fishery Management Councils, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, and NOAA Fisheries.

Climate Change Scenario Planning - Scenario Creation Workshop

  • DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Crystal City - Washington Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

East Coast fishery management bodies are currently engaging in a Climate Change Scenario Planning initiative to explore governance and management issues related to climate change and fishery stock distributions. The next phase of this work will be a 2.5 day Scenario Creation workshop, to be held in Arlington, VA on June 21-23, 2022.

Through a series of conversations and exercises, participants will create a set of scenarios that describe how climate change might affect East Coast fisheries in the next 20 years. Each scenario will describe a different way in which changing oceanographic, biological, and social/economic conditions could combine to create future challenges and opportunities for East Coast fisheries.

MREP Greater Atlantic - Fisheries Science Workshop

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is organizing two Marine Resource Education Program (MREP) workshops in the Greater Atlantic Region in early 2020:

1. MREP Fisheries Science Workshop – February 25-27, 2020, Woods Hole, MA

2. MREP Fisheries Management Workshop – March 24-26, 2020, Hanover, MD

  • Learn more about the workshops here.

  • Apply for a workshop online.

BACKGROUND: MREP Greater Atlantic was created by fishermen, for fishermen. It provides an inside look at the fisheries science and management processes, demystifies the acronyms and vocabulary, and equips fishermen with the tools to engage in shaping regulatory action and participating in collaborative science. In a neutral setting, fishermen work through the ‘how and why’ of the whole process, meet the people behind agency jobs, and share important feedback from the fishing community.

The program is offered as a series of workshops that build upon each other: a three-day Fishery Science Workshop, followed by a three-day Fishery Management Workshop. Presenters are drawn from the NMFS Regional Office and Science Center, the Fishery Management Councils, research institutions, and the fishing community. Workshops are designed and held as a collaborative effort, with members of the community moderating the meeting and assisting fellow fishermen to articulate issues, keeping the discussion real.

Participants leave the workshops with better understanding of how, when and where to engage effectively in fishery management.

For-Hire eVTR Training Workshop (Toms River, NJ)

  • Clarion Hotel & Convention Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council will hold two workshops in February to help for-hire vessel operators prepare for upcoming electronic reporting requirements. Beginning March 12, 2018, all vessels with Federal charter or party permits for species managed by the Mid-Atlantic Council will be required to submit electronic vessel trip reports (eVTRs) while on trips carrying passengers for hire. eVTRs must be submitted through a NOAA-approved software application within 48 hours following the completion of a fishing trip.

While all software options for electronic reporting will be briefly discussed, the workshops will primarily focus on training for the SAFIS eTrips/mobile and eTrips Online systems developed by the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program (ACCSP). Participants will receive hands-on assistance with navigating the eTrips application, setting up favorites, and creating and editing trip reports. Instruction will be led by Rick Bellavance, Owner/Operator of Priority Fishing Charters in Point Judith, Rhode Island, and ACCSP staff.

For more information about for-hire electronic reporting requirements and software options, visit http://www.mafmc.org/for-hire-evtr/.

Workshop Dates and Locations

Each session will be preceded by a discussion of all options for reporting. In the event that demand for eTrips/online instruction is low, a second eTrips/mobile session may be added in the afternoon.

Registration

To register for one of the workshops, complete the registration form at http://www.mafmc.org/forms/evtr-workshop-registration or email the workshop coordinator at aloftus@andrewloftus.com.
